BOYS’ TENNIS 2012
EAGLES DEFEAT DOS PALOS, FALL TO CVC–May 11
The Eagles traveled to Dos Palos to face the WSL league champs, May 9. Having lost to the Mustangs twice this season, the Eagles didn?t know how the match would turn out. Since it was the first round of playoffs the losing team would officially be done for the school year. The matches proved to be long and grueling. Players from both teams fought for the victory. In the end the Eagles were able to come out triumphant with a 5-4 win over the Mustangs.
For the first time in over four years years the Eagles have won a playoff game. Coach Rob Foshee is proud that his team came through in the clutch.
“It?s a great accomplishment to get a playoff win,” Foshee said. “We get a chance to play the No. 1 seed and you never know what could happen.”
Two days later, the Eagles headed out to Visalia to face the top ranked Central Valley Christian Cavaliers. Knowing this could be there last match of the season, FC played with determination. In the end, CVC overpowered the Eagles, defeating them, 8-1.
For the first time all season, senior Brady Lee was defeated. He ended up losing his singles match 1-6, 0-6 to junior Andrew Gong. Despite the loss, Lee is glad to have played Gong.
“It was pretty cool playing someone as good as Andrew,” Lee said. “I don’t feel bad losing to him at all. It’s a privilege to play one of the top ranked players in the valley. I can personally attest that he is a humble and nice guy.”
Though the Cavaliers proved to me a mighty force, their was one Eagle who came out victorious. Sophomore Daniel Moore played No. 5 singles for FC. After losing his first set, 4-6, he came back and won the second set, 6-4. It was truly a nail-biter as Moore battled it out in ten point tie-breaker. He shares how he kept his cool during the match.
“Honestly I tried not to think about how close it was,” Moore said. “When I try to stay focused I usually fail so I just played the game without thinking.”
Moore played with consistency and ended up winning the tie breaker, 12-10. He couldn’t help but smile after the match was over.
“It was a lot of fun because I lost some important matches earlier in the season so it was fun to win one,” Moore said.
Foshee shares his thoughts on the overall match as a whole.
“They are the No. 1 seed for a reason,” Foshee said. “We competed with them, didn’t get shut out, and played hard. They’re going onto the championship this week so I thought it was good experience for us.”
The Eagles tennis season has finally come to an end. All in all, Foshee is happy to know that his team met some of their main goals.
“We reached our goals of playing hard, learning, and ministering to the other teams,” Foshee said. “Everyone gave great effort. Younger players came along and senior players let us.”
Looking back on the season as a whole, Foshee says that his favorite memory was the bonding that occurred every week during practice.
“I always like the practice times because we get to talk and hang out,” Foshee said. “We work hard but also have fun together. We get to see each other, eat Frosty’s together, and share how we are going to shake hands at the net.”
