Many unsung heroes walk the halls of FC. They have hidden talents that go under the radar and often do not receive the recognition deserved.

For The Feather staff’s concluding editorial, we select a senior deserving of the title, Student of the Year. Although underdogs are often the favorites, it seems only right that an individual who immerses himself in high school life should receive this particular honor.

With an undeniable zest and enthusiasm for life and love, senior Josh Hopper now takes the spotlight as The Feather‘s fourth Student of the Year.

Hopper has quite the unique relationship with The Feather, as he appears at least once a week, whether we try to feature him or not. He has a way of popping up into every photo and article. Although we have a specific “do not use” list which has been dubbed “the Josh Hopper list,” his appearances are a testament to his involvement.

How can somebody who has been connected to Spanish Club, choir, ensemble, concert band, jazz band, worship team, soccer, baseball, golf, cross country, the homecoming king court, Night of the Stars, chapels, junior high small group leadership, two years as a Calvin Crest counselor, the mascot Fierce, announcing at sporting events, battle of the bands and an iTunes single not be considered the Student of the Year?

The third and final son in a legacy of Hopper brothers, Hopper dove into the ultimate high school experience from the start. By participating in a wide range of extracurriculars and athletics, Hopper became a well-known name on campus. Rather than being defined or overshadowed by his older brothers, he directed his own social pathway.

Hopper has not lived every day for himself, though. Through his many abilities, he has discovered ways to avenues the student body.

With music he is a key element to groups whether he is backing up on drums, leading with a guitar and passionate vocals, jazzing up a trombone or singing alongside choir members. He encourages teammates in athletics, and adds positive energy and talent to the teams. He is a behind-the-scenes supporter, lending his voice as an announcer and masked as Fierce. He takes leadership roles with his faith at Calvin Crest and sharing his heart in chapel.

The talents represented at FC are many, but what sets Hopper apart is the way he recognizes and utilizes gifts for the glory of God and for the benefit of others. Rather than keeping himself under wraps, Hopper does not hesitate to try new things and reach success.

His dedication does not stop at extracurriculars, but extends into the classroom. Though not a student with glittering academic accolades across the board, he commits himself to homework and stops at nothing to master a concept. He then continues to reach out to those who have not yet grasped the material and lends a hand until the job is done.

Hopper’s passion for life affects everyone in his path. Noticing the small beautiful things that often go unnoticed, he makes a point to bless those around him. He defines Student of the Year with vigor and talent, and will certainly continue to utilize his abilities as he continues education at Azusa Pacific University in the fall.

Although we on The Feather staff have put great efforts into not over-using Hopper, attention must be paid when recognition is due. We extend our gratitude and well wishes to Hopper as he continues to impact lives in his own Hopper style.
