The varsity football team traveled to Laton High School to battle the Mustangs for their second game of the season, Aug. 31. The Eagles lost 54-6 in their first away game of the season.
Junior Bobby Christopher, who had 26 rushing yards and 7 tackles, feels that although it was a rough game, it was a good experience for the team and they can take it in stride.
“I think it was actually a pretty fun game,” said Christopher. “I got to run the ball a bit more than usual, which was a nice change. You know we really didn’t play that bad, we just had a couple bad breaks and a couple injuries. We need to step up our defense a bit and keep our focus on the game. It’s a bummer that Noah [Belmont] and Adam [Khouzam] got injured, and I think that threw us off our game a bit.”
The Eagles’ only touchdown was scored by Freshman Jon Anguiano, the first of his career, off of a pass from Junior Caleb Nale in the third quarter.
“It felt pretty good.” Anguiano said. “It was a beautiful play. The defense was in zone, so I split the defenders and ran for the back corner of the end zone. When I turned, I saw Caleb throwing the ball, giving it a bit more arc than usual. At this point I knew that I had to catch it, so I kept telling myself, ‘Just catch the ball. It doesn’t matter if you get hit as long as you catch the ball’. Then I just brought it in and felt a rush of sheer exhilaration.”
The Eagles next game will be at Riverdale High School against the Cowboys, Sept. 7.
