The computer lab and science lab were not the only rooms that received new technology, the FC library acquired four new computers, Sept. 20. Most of the computers previously in the library no longer worked, so many students complained about their inability to do homework that required the Internet.
Director of Technology David Martens brought the four new computers to the library with new software, giving the students more resources with which to work. The computers have all been reformatted and are now available throughout the day.
Librarian Lin Brown explains that the computers needed to be replaced. A large number of students are already using the library’s new additions.
“Last year, there was a lot of hacking on the computers, so they needed to be replaced,” Brown said. “The computers really matter; it [the sign in sheet for the computers] goes on for two pages. They?re used before school, during lunch, after school, and during class. Sometimes kids come in from other classes.”
Andrew Guthrie, ’15, found the computers to be helpful for completing his schoolwork.
“The computers have been very helpful,” Guthrie said. “My printer at home wasn’t working, so I had to print it out at school. Without the computers, I would have been unable to turn in my essay.”
The computers also have all the new software, giving students more resources during study hall. Brown think that this will greatly help the students with their homework.
“What?s nice about the new computers is that there are more applications available to the students: there?s Keynote and Pages, some new apple suites that came out,” Brown said. “The students are starting to use these as well. Some of the newest programs are available on the computers giving students more freedom.”
Martens explains the necessity for the new computers’ arrival. The new computers were not the computers left over after the secretaries’ computers were replaced.
“The computers in the library were ten years old, so they had reached the point where they weren?t really functioning anymore,” Martens said. “The new computers actually came from secretaries? desks, so they weren?t actually retired. They were just being shuffled down to the Library after the secretaries received new computers.”
When Amy Savage, ’13, is unable to do homework on her computer at home, she is able to finish in the library.
“I use the computers in the library to finish the Take-Home Tutors for Spanish class,” Savage said. “The computers are really helpful since my computers at home are either broken or don’t work with the Take-Home Tutors. Fortunately, the computers in the library do work now.”
