Over the past few years, FC students have been raising money during December for the Craycroft Center through the sales of candy cane grams. For the second year in a row, The Feather staff is taking the initiative to buy and sell Candy Cane Grams to raise money for the Evangel Home, a shelter for abused women and children in downtown Fresno.
In the past, The Feather staff has volunteered at the home as well as donated various items such as gifts, food items and even clothing. The purpose for Candy Cane Grams is to bless those less fortunate and give back to the community in an act of service.
To participate in the fundraiser, students can purchase a gram for a dollar per card, write a note to a friend, parent, grandparent or teacher, and then return the printed card to the computer lab. The Feather staff will then deliver the gram by Dec. 13. All proceeds from the sale will go directly to the Evangel Home.
Editor in Chief, Tynin Fries, encourages students to purchase the grams due to the fact it is festive and thoughtful.
“Christmas is my favorite holiday, I appreciate that the journalism class is spreading the love and encouraging people to get into the christmas spirit,” Fries said. “It is the thought that counts and the act of service that makes it special.”
Although junior Jonathan Nyberg has never participated in buying candy cane grams before, he has received many from friends and looks forward to supporting the Evangel Home this year by purchasing some grams.
“I’ve never given a candy gram, but I’ve received them from friends,” Nyberg said. “It has made me feel really happy before, so I hope I can make others feel the same way this year. I think candy grams are a good idea because you can show people how much you appreciate them during the holidays and it gives them a little something nice.”
