After deciding to form a new club on campus, FC students created the Science Club. The club was put together by enthusiastic students excited about science and by science teacher Dan Harris. The Science Club is a group that meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3-4 p.m. in Harris’s room (622). Activities include blowing up various objects with chemical reactions and dissolving toys with acid.
As head of the FC Science Club, Harris enjoys what the club does and showing students the next level of what they learn in the science classes.
“Science is something that is growing and gaining expertise here at Fresno Christian right now,” Harris said. “As part of that I, and some of my students, decided to start a science club, and I was asked to be the adviser.”
Harris tries to use fun experiments to teach the members important lessons form physics, chemistry and biology, all while having fun.
“The point of the Science Club is to use all of the fun things about science like blowing stuff up and making acid burn matchbox cars,” Harris said. “In the next meeting were going to be launching slime balloons just to see how trajectories work from a physics perspective. We learn all of these things to scaffold the learning for students here at Fresno Christian to become better scientists.”
As president of the club, senior Garret Childs is excited to be able to put the things he learns in science to use. Childs is the key member to find and perform experiments for the club.
“I like the projects we create,” Childs said. “Its fun to apply all of the boring things we learn in class and make weird projects out of them. I like learning the different ways to put science to use.”
So far only a few people are in Science Club says Vice President Jonathon Brushwood, ’15, It is reallly fun getting to play with things one is usually not allowed to handle at school.
“Garrett {Childs}, Jason {Swain, ’15,} and I have always goofed off in the science room after school,” Brushwood said. “We decided to make a club out of it and bring in more ideas and include other people. Having it after school it gives us more time to play around. Sometimes Mr. {Dan} Harris will give us science lessons to go along side it.”
Though they enjoy the members who have joined, Childs and Brushwood want the club to expand and include more students from all areas of campus.
“We would love to have more people participate in our fun experiments,” Brushwood said. “I like doing all of the fun experiments, having explosions, playing with fire and getting to learn about science in different ways.”
So far only 12 people have joined the club, but they look forward to becoming a major part of campus. Childs looks forward to coming projects, which they have more flexibility with, now that the club is official.
“I would encourage students to join because you get to blow stuff up,” Childs said. “We can do more now, with a club, than we used to be able to do. We are hoping to launch rockets, make a go-cart powered by rockets or make a potato cannon.”
Members are making plans to continue the club, even after Childs graduates and develop it into a campus-wide event.
