After having a delayed flight from San Francisco to New York City (NYC), the group of six journalism students and their chaperone, Angie Fries, grandmother of Tynin Fries, ’14, and Callista Fries, ’15, arrived at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport at around 6 a.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST), March 18.
Though the group arrived early Mon. morning, they will be touring the city for half the week before participating in the 89th annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Spring Convention, March 20-22. During the convention, Editor-in-chief Tynin Fries, Senior Editor Maddie Yee, ’13, Multimedia Anchor Callista Fries, and Senior Videographer Juan Ruelas, ’13, will be presenting workshops on how to run an online newspaper and offer tips on podcasting.
Along with holding their own workshops, the staff will be attending other high school run newspaper classes at Columbia University. At the end of the week, the staff will attend the 2013 Online Crown Awards ceremony, in which they will receive either a Silver or Gold Crown.
Once the staff landed in NYC, they loaded two cabs and drove to their destination, Hotel Edison NYC, located in Midtown Manhattan. Following a two-hour rest period, the group made their way to Hoboken, New Jersey, where they visited Carlo’s Bake Shop, which is owned by Buddy Valastro, star of the TLC show Cake Boss. After purchasing some desserts from the bakery, the students made their way to 1Republik, an American eatery in Hoboken, where they enjoyed their lunch meal for the day.
The staff finished their day of touring by shopping in the Manhattan Mall and touring the top of the Empire Sate Building, followed by dinner at the Times Square Olive Garden. To complete their evening, the group made their way to Starbucks to write and edit articles, make slideshows and videos, and reflect on their journeys of the day.
