On the fourth day of the campus students’ trip to New York City (NYC), they spent most of the day attending the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) journalism conference, March 21. At Columbia, the students split up to take various workshops taught by professionals and conference attendees.
The group began the day early, meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of Hotel Edison to travel by subway to Columbia. Not forgetting the most important meal of the day, breakfast, the students snacked on bagels to fill their stomachs.
After arriving at the conference, the students split up into groups to head to two different lectures offered in the morning session. One class presented a panel of five professional journalists to answer questions that students with an interest in the media career had. Another gave the students ideas on how to improve different visual aspects into their online publication.
In between the morning session and afternoon sessions, the group of six students and their adviser stopped at Koronet Pizza. The slices could be ordered in a jumbo size, leaving the customer with a piece of pizza as big, if not bigger, than their head.
The afternoon sessions also kept the students learning, as they attended classes dealing with editing, online media improvements and social media tips. Before leaving, the group took some time to explore campus and take funny pictures, featured below.
Adviser Greg Stobbe decided to gift a giant pixie stick to senior Maddie Yee, Senior Editor. Each member of the group was forced to try some of the sour, orange-flavored powder which resulted in the many contorted faces pictured below in the slideshow.
After finishing their second day of classes at Columbia, the students headed back to the hotel for free time. While some stayed in the hotel to catch up on sleep and relaxation, others traveled to 5th Ave. to shop.
Once dinner rolled around, the group ate at the Hard Rock Cafe before returning to the hotel to work on updating The Feather of their day’s activity.
