While the school recognizes those who achieve great academic and athletic success, many who, while also succeed in those areas, accomplish great things without bringing them to the forefront of peoples attention.
The Feather has chosen a student to highlight who not only has great leadership skills but also influences the lives of those around him by not only his public accomplishments but also by his “unsung hero” moments.
For this reason, The Feather has chosen Brandon McCormick as our fifth Student of the Year.
When seniors were asked to stand up if they were lifers of FC at the 2013 graduation, McCormick stood tall among the few students who rose. He has spent his life at FC being a great example to his classmates, and even to those who he himself did not know were being influenced by him.
With McCormick’s involvement in sports such as basketball and football, his dedication to helping the young by participating in Brother to Brother, helping out with the Break the Barriers program at FC, volunteering his time at Valley Children’s Hospital to play with the kids and his status of honorary Student Leadership member, it only made sense to choose him for this recognition.
McCormick remained active in both football and basketball throughout his four years of high school. Holding the position of captain multiple times, he has led his team to victory in many cases and always encouraged them to push on even when the score was unsatisfactory.
Not only were his skills evident to his teammates but also to all who watched, landing him the title of 2nd Team All-League West Sequoia Wide Receiver his sophomore year of varsity football and 1st Team All-League
West Sequoia Wide Receiver his junior year of varsity football. He was also accepted to play in 2013 City/County All-star Football game his senior year.
In basketball McCormick supported his team every step of the way with receiving the Coaches award several times, Offensive Player of the Year award and the Captains award. With his team he also received the title of West Sequoia League Champions and CIF Central Section Champions with a record of 25-3 for the ’11-’12 school year.
However, sports is not all McCormick is known for. Well his leadership characteristics may be very evident on the field and court, he is also recognized for the attributes he brings to the programs at FC such as Brother to Brother. WIth McCormick’s passion for kids, he encompassed himself in activities that he could share his love for.
Even after involving himself in many school activities McCormick offered his time up to volunteer for jobs that were not required of him. Time after time he helped with many Student Leadership functions such as Sadies. He also lent his hand to other school events such as the Inspire Gala which hosted Tim Tebow.
Dedication, influence and passion are only a few words that describe McCormick. His work ethic and commitment to making FC a better place were very apparent to everyone around him. His light shined to those he came in contact with, especially the young children he dedicated his time to.
McCormick’s choice in activities reflects his career path quite clearly. He plans to attend California Baptist University (CBU) and major in Health Science. After CBU he then wants to move to a medical school and study Pre-Med to become a pediatrician.
We on The Feather staff offer our sincerest gratitude to the positive example McCormick has set for everyone around him. He has impacted many lives and we wish him well on his journey to become a pediatrician as we know he will continue to affect the lives around him in an uplifting way.
