Often in life people find themselves looking for something to find a passion for, something that gives them joy and meaning. Sophomore Kiaya Hargis found her passion in acting when she was little, and has loved it ever since.
Hargis plans to portray dedication through drama, participating in plays or musicals inside and outside of school. Currently Hargis is involved in 2nd Space Theatre with Good Company Players in the production of A Christmas Carol.
“Outside of school I act in 2nd Space Theatre, with Good Company Players,” Hargis said. “I have done drama there for about a year and a half now, I really enjoy it because it has a really good family feel. I also really enjoy preforming at 2nd Space because I am being paid, and you get to do about 40 performances, so its worth your while.”
Hargis enjoys performing with the cast of her upcoming play. She believes the audience will appreciate the humor and good acting that will be portrayed on stage.
“This year we are doing A Christmas Carol and I’m playing an ensemble part,” Hargis said. “You can definitely expect to laugh, because the people on stage are just really funny, they are really good entertainers.”
Throughout her four years in drama, Hargis still remembers her first play in seventh grade. She recalls the enthusiasm from the cast and the good times she had with her peers.
“I did my first play at FC, in the seventh grade, it was The Bible in 30 Minutes or Less,” Hargis said. “I played a lot of roles in the play because we all had to be different Bible characters. My favorite part about it was that everyone was really enthusiastic about the play, and were excited about being in drama.”
Fellow drama classmate Kyle Hudecek, ’14, sees the improvement Hargis has had over the years.
“Kiaya is really dedicated when she acts, she always goes for the whole role and uses a lot of her emotions,” Hudecek said. “She is really expressive on stage, does a lot of hand gestures and I think she’s gotten lots of lovable characters. She’s definitely improved from year to year.”

After her many years of drama Hargis reminisces on her past experiences with the class. She recalls her favorite plays as well as the roles that were more difficult for her.
“My favorite play has been Meet Me in St. Louis, being Tootie with Jenna Orcutt and Caitlin Gaines was just really fun,” Hargis said. “The most difficult was the Bible in 30 Minutes or Less, because I had to learn a lot of different parts and know when to go out on stage. My most embarrassing moment was when I forgot my lines on stage and then I said someone else’s, then we all got messed up.”
Junior Caitlin Gaines has participated in many productions with Hargis, throughout the years. She appreciates Hargis’ dedication to each character she has played.
“I have done several shows with Kiaya and we have been in drama together since 8th grade,” Gaines said. “My favorite show that I’ve seen her in is Meet Me In St. Louis, because she did a really good job. She is really good at sticking with her character and going as far as she can with the role. My favorite memory with her is when we did The Bible in 30 Minutes or Less because it was really fast paced and fun.”
Senior Elora Hargis, Kiaya’s sister, has seen her dedication to drama, and the amount of effort she puts in to it.
“I go to most of her plays, but mostly our parents go to support,” Elora said. “I make sure to go to at least one of each production that she’s in so she knows I support her and encourage her abilities. Kiaya makes her costumes at home and puts forth a huge amount of effort in to them. She goes thirfting a lot to find random odds and ends to put into her costumes. She just takes fabric and sews them together and creates the picture in her head.”
