On Saturday morning, September 7, the Eagles cross country team travelled to Kingsburg High School for the KHS 2-mile meet. The meet was separated by graduating class and gender, although younger runners had the option to participate in the Senior Sweepstakes race. The course was slightly different than the Kingsburg 2-mile track the Eagles ran in 2012.
Junior Aaron Dewolf was the only FC athlete to compete in the junior division, finishing with a time of 12:14.23. Seniors Tyler Laird, Codi Guidry, and Daniel Moore competed in the Senior Sweepstakes, finishing at 10:37.35; 11:46.09; and 12:25.96 respectively. Senior Rich Newman did not run do to an injury.
Senior Aliciana Quintana also ran in the Girl’s Senior Sweepstakes race, finishing in 16:16.45
Coach Ross Laird was reassured by the team’s performance in the meet. He appreciated the team’s effort in the 2-mile race.
“The team ran great,” Laird said.”It was very encouraging to see how everybody did. Tyler took almost a minute off of his time from last year. The whole team ran really hard; I was extremely pleased with everybody’s effort. Everybody is improving steadily, and our goal of reaching the state meet is beginning to look like a very real possibility.”
Codi Guidry was satisfied with his performance in the meet. He remembered the course from previous years.
“I was about one second away from my PR [personal record] in track, so that was good,” Guidry said. “I always like running in the mornings. It was a lot different than our last race. The new course was good. I think I liked the old Kingsburg course better, though.”
Aliciana Quintana mentioned that she exceeded her own expectations in the meet. She noted that the Kingsburg course was easier to run.
“I think that it went pretty well for a second meet,” Quintana said. “I was surprised with my time, because it was better than I expected in this meet. I liked the course a lot, since it was flat and shorter.”
The Eagles run next at the Sanger Invitational at Avocado Lake on Friday, September 20.
