On Sept. 20, the same day as the Beach Trip, the FC cross country team travelled to Avocado Lake for the Sanger Invitational. The course was three miles long, winding around the lake. Junior Aaron Dewolf and sophomore Michael Fu missed the event, since they had already signed up for the Beach Trip. Also, the team recently learned that senior Rich Newman will likely miss the rest of the season due to a groin injury.
In the boys varsity race, Tyler Laird finished first for the Eagles with a time of 17:23.00. He was followed by Codi Guidry at 18:31.00 and Daniel Moore at 20:48.20.
Aliciana Quintana was the lone runner for the Eagles in the girls varsity race. She finished the three-mile course in 26:50.40.
Coach Ross Laird was optimistic about the team’s chances in future meets.
“We are improving, week by week,” Laird said. “Tyler {Laird} ran a great race; he had a big PR {personal record}. Everybody improved throughout the whole lineup. This next meet at Woodward Park will be a good benchmark for us.”
Team captain and senior Tyler Laird noted that parts of the course made running difficult.
“The course was pretty disgusting,” Tyler said. “The second mile was really dusty and had some bad rocks. The sand prevented you from kicking off very well. Other than that, the race went pretty well, as far as times go.”
Senior Codi Guidry showed an absurd amount of enthusiasm in expressing his enjoyment of the race.
“I loved it,” Guidry said. “It was a harder race, but it was fun. The weather was pretty nice, and it was just a great all around race.”
The Eagles will next travel to compete in the next meet, Golden Eagle Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27 at Woodward Park.
