Fresno will host the 94th annual Veteran’s Day Parade, known to be a phenomenon as it is the largest parade held west of the Mississippi, Nov. 11. This parade, which begins in front of Fresno’s CIty Hall, at 11 a.m., encompasses many attractions from year-to-year, including the campus marching band.
Campus students have a one-time opportunity to be able to represent campus by marching in the parade alongside their band. It is a chance to participate in a national event, and pay respect to America’s past and present servicemen and women.
Each year, the Veterans Day Parade brings national recognition and involvement to the Central Valley, as it will be broadcasted world-wide. There will be many floats, bands, associations and food gathered together to honor soldiers for their service. This year the Marines military branch will be the focus.
Music Director Michael Ogdon is is looking forward to the parade because he believes in involving the students in the community.
“Community exposure is the goal,” Ogdon said. “We need to be known in Fresno. Community involvement is crucial.”
Students are being given the opportunity to participate and march in the parade. One practice qualifies students to walk alongside FC’s percussion line and color guard flag team.
Junior Summer Villanueba plans to march alongside the rest of her color guard team.
“I’m really excited to be a part of the parade,” Villanuaba said. “I feel our color guard team will perform well, we have improved so much throughout this time. Also my grandfather was a war veteran, and I’m bringing him along with me so he will be recognized.”
To walk alongside the band, students must attend one practice. The practice will be held on Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., Nov. 5. Buses will transport students, and adult sponsors to downtown Fresno, Nov. 11.
The Fresno parade will be broadcast on both the Pentagon Channel and on NBC affiliate, KSEE 24.
