In this edition of “Get to Know,” staff writer Trevor Beal, ’15, interviews freshman and varsity volleyball player, Jennifer King.
Freshman year presents a challenge for underclassmen; they must try to be mature while still engaging in underclassmen activities. These students often stick together in their social groups as well as on their sports teams.
Jennifer King, ’17, is a different case. She has earned a spot on the varsity girls volleyball team as a freshman. Read more about her role on the varsity team in Girls volleyball looks forward to the 2013 season.
King has been playing volleyball since the seventh grade, but she has had to improve her skills and work ethic this year. King’s hard work has paid off as all of the time and practice is important to her and her team.
Sports and academics both require time, so King aims to balance her academic progress with her athletic practice. This is the job of a student athlete at any level.
Beal: What made you first take interest in volleyball?
King: It seemed fun to me to play in the seventh grade because I had never played before, and I love sports.
Beal: Are you hoping to obtain a scholarship in order to continue playing at a higher level?
King: Yes I am, I would love to continue to play after my four years at FC are done.
Beal: What is it like to be a freshman on the varsity girl volleyball team?
King: I love being competitive and being on the varsity team. I have to push myself to get better, in order to see court time I have to push myself.
Beal: What have you had to change in order to be on varsity team?
King: I have had to step up my game and work harder. My team mates help push me to be my best.
Beal: Is it more pressure being on the varsity team?
King Yes, but I like it because I am improving my skills on a daily basis.
Beal: Do you have a volleyball idol?
King: No, Not really. I don’t watch enough volleyball to have a favorite player. I enjoy watching the team work together rather than one player dominate.
The Eagles will next play at home against Riverdale at 6 p.m., Nov. 7.
