The soccer and basketball teams will be traveling to Caruthers High School to take on the Blue Raiders, Jan. 31. Girls soccer will play at 3:45 p.m. with the boys playing at 5:30 p.m. The JV basketball will play at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7:00 p.m.
Freshman Trevor Trevino takes this game as a chance to prove their merit as a power in Divison IV basketball.
“I believe that our team plays with heart,” Trevino said. “I believe that we’re starting to play with passion, and I think that if we all trust each other and play with 100% effort, we have more than a chance to win.”
Trevino encourages people to venture out to Caruthers to support the team as well as the soccer teams and JV basketball.
“People should go to the game because Fresno Christian basketball has showed out,” Trevino said. “We’ve won our last few games, and that proves that we are more than capable of winning tomorrow. People should also go and support our other teams that are playing.”
Caruthers is a well known rival of FC, as both schools annually battle over league titles and bragging rights in countless competitions spanning all three sport seasons.
Basketball coach Robert Hubbard believes that the Eagles have what it takes to take hold of the West Sequoia League (WSL), and that all they have to do is go out and capture it.
“I’m really excited about the position we’re in,” Hubbard said. “Our goal has been to win the West Sequoia League Championship and our kids have worked hard to give us a chance to compete for it. We’re playing really well on the offensive side of the ball. We have a lot of people capable of scoring and we’re doing a great job of sharing. We’re also starting to make our free throws.”
However, Hubbard sees a major barrier in their road to success. He recognizes the weaknesses of the team but hopes to improve them.
“The area that we need to get better at is defense,” Hubbard said. “We are very athletic and that sometimes gives us the false idea that we can take chances. We need to get back to fundamental defense and work hard to stop teams.”
Varsity cheerleader Kim Ward, ’15, hopes that many FC supporters will travel to root on the Eagles. She sees the potential in all the sports teams, and hopes to pull out a win.
“Everyone should be excited about the games because we have been rivals with them for sometime,” Ward said. “The teams we have this year are more than capable of returning to Fresno victorious over the Blue Raiders.”
Soccer captain Annalise Rosik, ’14, looks forward to the matchup, as she does every year.
“Caruthers is our most heated rival in the league,” Rosik said. “They’re a very talented team, but out of everyone in our league, I believe that we are the team that puts up the most fight. They’re very aggressive. There will be quite a bit of motivation to outwork each other on the field.”
Rosik encourages students and parents of the school to make it a priority to attend Eagle sporting events. She sees it as a great way to show school spirit.
“There’s only so many games that you have in high school to go to,” said Rosik. “If you’re not doing anything on a Friday, why not be a good fan by supporting your friends and your school.”
A rooter bus will be leaving FC at 3:30 p.m., and seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
