EAGLES LOSE TO CARUTHERS AFTER HARD BATTLE
Already having played the Caruther Blue Raiders on Jan. 13, the Eagles knew the competition that would be expected from this particular team. Traveling to the Caruthers home field, the Eagles were motivated for this game, Jan 31.
Being the last game this season to play the Blue Raiders, the Eagles came out hard and determined to win. Both teams were evenly matched, with the ball equally on both sides of the field.
During the first half, the Blue Raiders shot the ball over the defensive line and were able to shoot a ball into the top right corner of the goal. Before the end of the half, Caruthers passed a low ball in the goal, finishing 0-2.
As the team prepared to finish the game, Coach Tony Martinez lead the girls in a pep talk before going out. Both teams were aggressive and allied the pressure on either teams goals.
While going up for a header against an opponent, sophomore Brittany Bender was hit in the head and was semi-unconcious on the field. With the game paused, the athletic trainers and the coaches tended to her needs. She was escorted off the field ten minutes later by the paramedics, diagnosed with a concussion.
Despite being a little unsettled about Benders accident, the Eagles were able to hold off the Blue Raiders until the end of the game, ending with a final score of 0-2 in favor of Caruthers.
“This game was tough on the team,” Martinez said. “Although, because it was our last game playing Caruthers this year, the girls played an awesome game together. If the girls play like they did against Caruthers for future games, we will win.”
Freshman Jennifer King, playing forward, knew the type of team Caruthers was and how she needed to play in order to overcome the Blue Raiders. Even though Benders accident shook up the team, King was determined to play for her.
“Caruthers always brings a challenging and tough game,” King said. “They have been the FC girls soccer teams’ rivalry for awhile. We played a good game and came out hard but it wasn?t enough against the skills of the opponents. Although Brittany was hurt pretty badly it pushed us to finish off the rest of the game for her.”
