EAGLES PULL OUT LEAGUE TITLE IN NAIL-BITER; 62-53, Feb. 21
After defeating Caruthers at home to tie the Blue Raiders for first place in West Sequoia League standings, the Eagles needed a victory against the Fowler Redcats to seal a 2014 WSL Championship. However, they would have to do it on the road in a hectic Fowler environment and defeat the Redcats on their Senior Night. The Eagles had beaten Fowler earlier in the season, but doing so on the road would be easier said than done.
The Redcats came out strong and on fire offensively, scoring quickly and taking an early lead. The teams effective zone also prevented the Eagles from scoring at their regular pace. As a result, Fowler dominated the first quarter and led 12-22. In the second quarter the Eagles continued their scoring struggles and only managed 26 points in the first half. By halftime, the Redcats extended the lead to ten, 26-36.
However, the Eagles were not going to give up a league championship that easily. Coming out of halftime, FC came out with a purpose and quickly fought back to get in the game. With a new offensive strategy and improved effort on defense, the Eagles managed to take the lead by the end of the quarter by holding Fowler to only six points. In the fourth, the Eagles kept up their intensity and refused to let the Redcats regain the lead. Thanks to some late-game free-throws, the Eagles were able to pull away and seal the victory, 62-53 over Fowler High School.
The Eagles were led offensively by senior Brian Scott, who had a season-high 32 points. Meanwhile, the Redcats’ Harvey Sahota led the way with 17.
With the win, the Eagles clinched their second WSL Championship in three years with a 18-7 (9-1) record for the year.
Head Coach Robert Hubbard is very happy and proud of all the team’s hard work and effort put into this season.
“Our number one goal this season was to win a league championship and our kids work extremely hard to accomplish that.” Hubbard said, “It is a wonderful feeling for our program and all of our supporters. Fowler had a great game plan and played terrific; our kids got down early but never quit.”
The team now sets their sights on playoffs and making it to the sacred Selland Arena as the seek a Division IV Valley Championship. The Eagles will play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 25 for their first playoff game as they play Liberty Madera-Ranchos High School to move on to the next round.
“Next up we face Liberty Madera Ranchos in the playoffs.” Hubbard said, ” I’m fired up because not only is it a home playoff game, but that it is against a school I used to coach at. I hope every Fresno Christian student makes it out to the game Tuesday to lead us to victory.”
