In a unique demonstration of their skill, the boys’ varsity tennis team captured gold, silver and bronze in the WSL singles league tournament held on May 3 through May 5.
The event, which was temporarily postponed due to rain, attracted top players from around the Valley. Michael Van Beek, ’03, defeated Eric Witters, ’04, for first and Collin Tally, ’04, took third.
“I was very pleased to win our league tournament this year,” Van Beek said. “I was confident coming in that I could at least make it to the finals because I was undefeated in singles during league play.”
Van Beek entered the event seeded first, and advanced through the tournament facing competitors from Fowler, Firebaugh, and teammate Witters in the final match. Witters, who was sixth seed coming in to the tournament, defeated many higher seeds from other competing schools.
“The first half line-up is the reason why I got the sixth seed in the tournament,” Witters said. “I decided that I would overcome that little set back and prove I was one of the top players in the league. The match between Beek and myself was the most fun I’ve had all year.”
Van Beek was pleased with the overall success of the team members in competition and hopes the success will continue on next year.
“I was discouraged when my coach did not allow me to play number one seed early on in the season,” Van Beek said. “In the second half of the season I came back, defeated all the other number one seeds and now I am content.”
The team received a No. 2 seed behind Immanuel in the Sierra Division playoffs. The boys’ home game on May 13 will be against an undetermined opponent.
