EAGLES TAKE BOTH GAMES OF DOUBLE HEADER, March 22
For their second double header of the season, the Fresno Christian baseball team travelled to the town of Avenal to play the Buccaneers. The Eagles sought to remain undefeated and improve to 7-0 by the end of the day.
Senior David Ryu took the mound for the Eagles in the first game for his first start of the season. Avenal meanwhile threw their ace right hander Jamie Ramos. Ramos fastball-slider combination had many of the Eagles batters off-balance at the plate. After a few scoreless innings the Buccaneers were able to drive across the games first run.
However, the Eagles struck back with two runs of their own. After that, it was a back-and-forth battle. Sophomore Tyler Breedlove came in to relieve Ryu in the third, and later in that same inning Junior Aaron DeWolf came in to finish the inning. By the end of the third Avenal was in control 4-2.
But at the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles came alive at the plate. Driving in run after run, not only to tie the game but to take the lead. They scored five runs in the fourth inning making the score 7-4. But the Buccaneers would not go away, driving home two more in the fifth making it a one run game. After a scoreless sixth inning the Eagles were able to pull away in the top of the seventh, driving home four more runs and putting the game away. Junior Taylor Howard came in to close the game as the Eagles took game one 11-6.
After a twenty five minute break the second game was under way. Avenal was forced to throw their number two pitcher as Ramos pitched 6 2/3 innings in the first game. The Eagles on the other hand sat some of their starters to rest for later in the day.
Nonetheless, the Eagles were able to take an early lead by driving home two quick runs in the top of the first. Junior Taylor Howard started the second game and was absolutely brilliant. He pitched 3 scoreless innings with 7Ks before he was replaced by Sophomore Tyler Sellers in the fourth.
By this time, the Eagles had taken control of the game 5-0, but they weren’t finished yet. They tacked on two more in the fourth and four more in the fifth, increasing their lead to 11. Avenal managed to drive in three runs of their own in the fifth, but it was too late. After the fifth inning came to a close the game was called due to time restrictions and FC took game two, 11-3.
Senior Lucas Lopez said the two games were great for the team to experience as they approach the start of league.
“The games went very well considering we didn’t have two of our pitchers (senior Caleb Nale and Fresnman George Castro).” Lopez said, “It shows that other people on the team are willing to step up when the team needs them. The games gave us the confidence to go against teams like Firebaugh on Tuesday.”
The Eagles next game will be at home against defending Division V champion Firebaugh High School.
