Every year the Spanish club does one local and one international service project as part of its commitment to community service. This year, the local project has been making Easter baskets full of toys, candy, and a gospel tract for kids attending Iglesia PC, the Spanish-speaking congregation within Peoples Church.
The baskets were assembled during the Spanish Club meeting on April 8, and the officers and any club members who wanted to attend, helped deliver the baskets during a Spanish-speaking service on April 9 after school.
Spanish Club advisor Beatriz Foth described some of the goals of the project.
“I think for us, every time that we get involved in a service project, our goal is to help others,” Foth said. “That’s why Spanish Club has at least one international and local service project each year. We were able to partner with Iglesia PC, and we found out that there are some families who are in need and might not have been able to buy any gifts for their children for Easter, so we made Easter baskets for them.”
She hopes that this project will benefit both the recipients of the baskets and the students who helped with the project.
“Basically, it’s just showing the love of Christ and sharing what we have with someone else,” Foth said. “Hopefully the students realized that something so simple that we might take for granted can encourage people. We also included a brochure about Jesus’ death and resurrection in Spanish to make sure that we are conveying the message.”
Spanish Club member Justin Houts, ’16, helped assemble the baskets and went with the officers to deliver them.
“I thought this project was a really easy way to serve others,” Houts said. “Also, sitting in on the Spanish church service was an interesting experience. I felt like I could understand what the pastor was saying, even though it was in Spanish.”
Spanish Club President Adam Loughney, ’14, said that the project was a positive experience.
“The Easter basket project is a great opportunity for the Spanish Club to reach out to others,” Loughney said. “The baskets were fun to make, and hopefully they will brighten a child’s day on Easter. The point of service projects is to support others in our community and show that we care.”
