Art teacher, Sharon Scharf, has headed the Fresno Christian Art program for over 24 years. She teaches a variety of skills and equips her students with the basic foundational elements of art.
Throughout the year, her classes watch a plethora of art videos, experiment with kinds of painting, paper mache, sketching, carving and even egg coloring. As the year winds down the students focus in on the art of water color. Given the abilities of some students, their art was displayed in local art shows.
“We entered in several shows this year,” Scharf said. “We competed in the Congressional High School art competition, Old West Show and ACSI art festival in Sacramento.”
These art shows all showcase hundreds of entries from several local and out of town artists. It is an accomplishment to place or be recognized for a piece of art.
“We always enter into the local shows like The Big Fresno Fresno Fair and Clovis Art Guild’s show,” Scharf said. “I encourage my students to do their best all throughout the year, it is exciting for them to see work they are proud of up at a show.”
Every year Scharf is happy about the recognition FC art students gain. Throughout the years, students have won various awards for many different types of art.
“I enjoy being able to show off our students art work at the shows, the kids have so much talent,” Scharf said. “Every year the students art seems to catch the judges attention and we usually get recognized.”
Every art show has its own regulations and expectations. But, regardless of objectives for the art pieces, Scharf showcases which ever piece she believes is worthy of showing the public.
“Some shows have to have the artwork framed, and others can be anything,” Scharf said. “If I feel the piece is worthy to be shown, I will show it at the festivals.”
Scharf explains her motivation for participating in the local and out of town festivals. She believes it is a great way to show the different aspects of FC and highlight the art department, including the talent from the students.
“I want to show the community what FCS can do, that we can keep up with public schools,” Scharf said. “I know pride is a sin and in this case I guess I am a little sinful!”
