While preparing for their upcoming season, the boys’ soccer team logged long hours trudging around?a golf course?
In a fundraising effort, the campus team organized a golf tournament for Oct. 4. Team members caddied for participants, who competed for prizes at while golfing at the Fig Garden Golf Course.
“The golf tournament was a real hit,” Tim Westra, ’05, said. “The event was really long and tiring, and it really killed your feet. But still, it was a lot of fun to get out with the guys in a relaxed environment.”
With the money raised, the team plans to update their current soccer gear.
“We held the tournament just to raise money for the team,” Matthew Markarian, soccer coach, said. “We hope to buy new uniforms and equipment with the money we’ve raised.”
As the opening of their season draws near, team members look forward to practices and getting started.
“The last couple of years on the team, we haven’t had very many victories,” Westra said. “But our team looks good this year, and I think we will win some games this year. Early practices have gone well.”
Older team members anticipate mentoring younger players, continuing the tradition of peer relationships within the team.
“The younger players follow the older, more skilled players,” Joshua Powell, ’05, said. “The new players pay attention to us and learn from our example. I think we can teach them as much as the coaches can.”
