Following the tradition of Greg Stobbe’s freshman English class, the ninth grade Honors English students congregate in the high school office to perform “Beasts of England” from George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm. Secretaries Yoko Kilbourne and Michelle Regnerus made up the audience of two, onlooking the lively event.
During the spring, as freshman classes read Animal Farm, they sing “Beasts of England” daily to experience firsthand the rebellious atmosphere experienced by independent farm animals of Orwell’s book.
In Animal Farm, word of the Rebellion was carried across the countryside and thus Stobbe paralleled his students’ journey around campus to the widespread publicity of Orwell’s animal uprising.
The 14- and 15-year-olds portrayed the story’s pigeons as they marched though the halls, creating jealousy within the other students’ hearts and challenged them to memorize the obscure verses and join in the chants.
