Over the summer a gaming legend passed away and I thought, though it is a bit late, that we can still celebrate his life in the first post of the year.
In 2002 Satoru Iwata took over running Nintendo and under his charge the company prospered. Iwata was in charge during the company greatest moments, namely the success of the Wii and the D.S.
More recently however Iwata was in charge for the launch of the Wii U which underperformed and Iwata gave away his bonus and a good part of his salary to help lessen the loss that the company took from the failure.
However most importantly, Iwata was a passionate and loving soul who did anything to help the company he loved and the industry he worked in.
I have never been a huge fan of Nintendo recently but regardless of my feelings toward the company, I was touched by this amazing man and wish the best for his friends and family.
The rest of the article will be a few quotes from an amazing man who will be missed.
“I’ve never once been embarrassed that children have supported Nintendo. I’m proud of it. That’s because children judge products based on instinct. Everyone wants to appeal to people’s instincts, but it’s not easy.”
Unfortunately with his last major release Iwata did not appeal to mass audience. The Wii U under sold massively.
“On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.”
These are words that every game enthusiast hopes to say.
“Video games are meant to be just one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone.”
