New York Fashion Week just ended with a bang and a wildly creative show by Marc Jacobs at the Ziegfeld Theatre. Fashionistas have now crossed the Atlantic for London Fashion Week, then off to Milan and finally, Paris.

With Christians being beheaded and persecuted worldwide, fashion may seem a frivolous and insignificant topic. Let’s take a deeper look as to why it’s not as unimportant as it may seem.
Fashion, Practically
We all get dressed, every single day. Whether you’re into fashion or not, and whether or not you think about what you put on your body or just grab the closest (cleanest) items in your room, you still have to get dressed every morning. There are rules of engagement in our society and one major rule is that we don’t walk around naked – Adam and Eve kind of ruined that for us, but we’ll get to that later.
Some people are more into fashion than others. You might enjoy keeping up with the latest trends and coordinating a cute outfit for school or special events. But some of you may not be too into it and may not care too much about what you wear or how you look; you may focus on different aspects of your personality instead. There’s no right or wrong here, but we all have to wear clothes when we step out of our home. Despite your opinion about “fashion,” clothing does matter.
Fashion, Impactfully
Like it or not, how we present ourselves to others is crucial and the way we dress plays a huge part in the impression we make on the people around us. How we dress reflects our individuality, our personal style, and even what we stand for. As Christians, especially, how we present ourselves impacts our witness, and our clothing choices play a part in that.
Our personal style is an extension of who we are, and our clothing choices send a message without us having to speak a word. They reflect our tastes, our aesthetic, and how we see ourselves. And often, our external style is a direct reflection of who we are inside, as well as who we want to be.
Fashion, Realistically
Before Coco Chanel, before Valentino, before Proenza Schouler there was… God. Yes, I know – “In the beginning, God.” But in the beginning of fashion, also.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, their eyes were opened to their own nakedness. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them (Genesis 3:21). God was the first fashion designer. Those first “designs” covered mankind’s sin, but as always, Jesus heals and restores us from our sins. Today we can choose designs that glorify Him.
