Late night campfires, a giant slide and comic sketches are a few of the highlights of the annual senior retreat. Many campus seniors anticipate the long awaited weekend getaway.
“I’m so excited about the senior retreat,” Carson Belmont, ’05, said. “It’ll give me a chance to escape from the city insanity and just have fun in the mountains with my friends. I really get to appreciate more in the atmosphere of the woods.”
Seniors head to Calvin Crest for the weekend on Sept. 25-26. The senior retreat is an opportunity for classmates to bond and experience team-building activities. Although it is only one weekend, it allows students to escape the chaos of normal life and focus on friendships.
“The senior retreat is a great opportunity for solidity and togetherness,” Robert Foshee, civics teacher, said. “It’s a great way to kick off the year. Being out of town adds a lot to the retreat.”
Many seniors are overwhelmed by the amount of work and social life. The retreat provides relief to many.
“The senior retreat is one of the most critical events for seniors,” Molly Sargent, senior English teacher, said. “The most positive feedback at the end of the year is about the senior retreat. It’s an opportunity for seniors to escape from jobs and dating and bond with each other.”
Among the numerous activities is a comedy sketch segment in which the students are allowed to mock campus teachers. This is one of the favorite traditions at the retreat.
“I’m really looking forward to the skits at the senior retreat,” Nic Westburg, ’05, said. “I can’t wait to play Mr. (Scott) Falk or Foshee in camp. It will be hilarious.”
Along with free time to swim, hike or play foosball, students also have an opportunity to worship under the starry sky of Calvin Crest. They are broken off into smaller groups to help facilitate a more sincere connection with God.
“The night walk and the worship was really spectacular when I went last year,” Randy Hill, ’04, said. “I can remember how fun it was just to be with friends. It was one of the best times of my senior year.”
