As seasons change, many cities in the Valley are experiencing freezing temperatures in December and January. Many people are under the misconception that during the cold weather, less food grows and is available for sale at local farmer’s markets. However the venders at the Old Town Clovis Farmers market provide fresh fruits and vegetables all year round.
Old Town Clovis‘ year round farmers market is every Saturday from 8-11:30 a.m. Admission is free, and the market is located on the corner of Pollasky and Bullard avenues in Clovis. Venders sell everything from fresh eggs, vegetables, fruits, and raisins, to grass-fed beef and even herbs.
According to VisitClovis.com, the Clovis Clipper Crab Company will be there every week with fresh crab and lobster. There are also many other products sold at the farmers market. These include handmade household items such as bath salts and loofas. They also sell homemade food items, which include fresh squeezed orange juice, honey, and bee pollen.
“My dad is really in to eating food that does not contain heavy preservatives,” Mikayla Messer, ’14, said. “So, the farmers market in Clovis is a perfect place for my family to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. We love making beef stew in winter and we love buying root vegetables at the market. My personal favorite is the fresh squeezed orange juice and honey.”
Walking around and spending time with friends and family buying fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers or bath salts with the farmers who grow and sell them. Old Town Clovis’ environment is filled with friendly faces, making visitors feel warm and welcomed.
Amy Ladd, mother of student Emily Ladd (’16), attends the summer and winter farmer’s markets. She shared what made the local event so great.
“I love the farmers market for the great variety of fresh, local produce at great prices and other items like honey, cheese, etcetera,” Ladd said. “The Friday markets in summer are a fun, festive atmosphere with the music and food booths as well. The Saturday market is smaller but still great; and it’s nice to be able to take advantage of our year round growing season.”
