Snow cones ooze their sticky, syrupy sweetness down faces, across grimy fingers and onto school-spirited T-shirts. Gleeful cries echo across the field, and children run chaotically from booth to booth.
The annual Kid’s Karnival promises to entertain and amuse students while relieving their parents. The Carnival will take place during the home football game against Fowler on Oct. 1.
“The kids love the carnival,” Josh Tosland, student leadership advisor, said. “It has always been a great success in the past.”
The Carnival requires hours of work and planning before it can become a success. This year, student leadership will make a point to target elementary students on the Northeast campus by holding a pep rally on their campus. Tosland hopes that promoting the event to those students will increase attendance at the event.
“We have to determine the purpose of the event, the means of how to meet those purposes, which games to have and the audience we’re targeting,” Tosland said. “We have to promote the event to the elementary kids on both campuses, and we have to coordinate events with parents, plus find students to run things. We have to buy, rent and borrow supplies as well.”
The time spent by members of student leadership generally pays off as they watch enthusiastic kids enjoy the games.
“Working with the kids and seeing how happy there are when they come to our booths is the best part,” Josh Wright, ’05, said.
As leadership members work in the booths, many enjoy the opportunity to spend time with their friends as well.
“I really enjoy the fellowship with other student leadership members,” Layne Meadows, ’05, said.
Activities available at the carnival will range from bounce houses and a dunk tank to face painting and various chance games.
Past year’s participants remember the event fondly.
“Seeing how happy the kids were just to be there was definitely the best part,” Whitney Ensom, ’05, said. “They were so happy have a chance to do the things we put together.”
The carnival will begin at 5:30 P.M. and run until the end of half time during the varsity football game. Tickets will be on sale for 50 cents at the event.
