In the few years that I have been writing this blog, I think I have made it abundantly clear that I am not a huge fan of the Call of Duty. So when the new Call of Duty was announced this week, I immediately thought to myself “I couldn’t care less”. Then the guys over at Activision did the impossible, for a minute they made me care.
This week Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was announced to much mehs. Now first of all, I have to point out that that title is terrible. Modern Warfare made sense. Advanced Warfare was kinda dumb but it still at least made sense but Infinite Warfare is terrible. The trailer that they released was kinda bland. It looked like they were doing a remake of Halo Reach and they chose a cover of Space Oddity as the background song, which turned out to be a bad choice as the cover is kinda awful. All this kinda terrible marketing culminated in the final moment that actually got me to care a little bit. At the end of the trailer there was a little spot showing that a special edition of the game would come with a remake of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which is arguably the best Call of Duty game and is certainly my favorite.
My reaction to this was one of hope as I said to my self “Cool! That was the last good Call of Duty game, I would gladly buy that whenever it releases by itself just to play it again.” Then, not a half hour later, I read a headline saying that the remake would not be sold on its own and would only be sold along side an 80 dollar version of Infinite Warfare. For a half hour I cared about Call of Duty again but I will not pay 80 dollars to play a game that I can just break out my old 360 and load up right now for free.
The only thing that has really come of this is I am more solid in my distaste for Call of Duty as well as I am seriously debating bringing out the 360 and playing through Modern Warfare again because that game is actually pretty awesome.
Just as a side note to the story, the trailer for Infinite Warfare has now become the most disliked video game trailer on youtube. This kind of surprised me because, despite the terrible reviews and sales going down, Call of Duty still sells incredibly well so I figured the die hard Call of Duty fans would love the trailer but it seems like its been universally panned.
