?Where?s the tape, I need the tape,? a flustered girl yells. ?Over here, over here; hurry! Get the tape over here!? her fellow student bellows. ?Markers; we need markers,? the leader of the group orders.
Together, they successfully create a sign so astounding it draws the entire student body to the table. Mission accomplished.
This scarcely describes the job of a student leadership member. Every year a new student leadership team is made. Members of the current team and staff advisers interview team hopefuls.
Student leadership?s job is to plan campus events and make the year fun and enjoyable for everyone. Their jobs vary from planning the high school formal to making fun new games for sports rallies.
The job of a student leader often is no easy task and neither is the process of choosing one.
?The members are chosen on many different aspects,? Josh Tosland, leadership adviser, said. ?Class dynamics, behavioral styles, experience, eagerness and new contributions to the class are important. Also, time and commitment, teacher references, evaluations, interviews and their testimonies etc.?
Knowing the job of a student leader is not an easy one often discourages applicants. However, some current freshmen decided they would like to be a part of this group their sophomore year.
?I applied for student leadership because I?ve always enjoyed serving others, and I feel that I could bring a lot to this school,? Claire Kister, ?08, said. ?I think I could bring a lot of enthusiasm and new ideas to the team.?
Kister also feels that being in student leadership next year will make her sophomore year better.
?I look forward to everything: the rallies, big events, setting up and cleaning up,? Kister said. ?I also look forward to representing our future sophomore class and especially serving others.?
Another freshmen also decided he wanted to be a part of this high-spirited team.
?I wanted to become more involved in the student body because I feel I was not very involved this year,? Coleton Hutchins, ?08, said. ?I am hoping to get to know more people next year by working with them on various projects.?
Hutchins decided to be involved in student leadership because he feels it is where God wants him to be.
?I think that God has given me the natural ability to lead, so hopefully I can help in that sense,? Hutchins said.
Some may think that, because they have class leaders, they have no say in what goes on in their school; but the team has a new goal for the upcoming year.
?Our goal for next year is to actively seek students outside of the class to participate in planning and organizing events for the year,? Tosland said.
It seems as though this year?s student leadership has made the class of ?08 feel very welcome in the challenging high school environment. They have influenced them to join the team and are dedicated to making a wonderful freshmen year for the incoming class of ?09.
