The graduating class of 2005 chose their class verse from 1 Peter 2:9: ?But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.?

Individual seniors gave their insight upon the meaning of this passage.

?I believe the word ?chosen? means that we are loved, special and privileged,? Hillary Kell said.

Lindsey Martens believes that this verse points out to the fact that each Christian has a specific purpose made for them. Emily Boyko follows the same belief as she thinks that it means that Believers are chosen to do God?s will.

However, some students hold a different view regarding the direction of 1 Peter 2:9.

?I believe that the word ?chosen? represents Jews,? Tyler Charest said. ?…Since the Bible refers to them as chosen people.?

Nate King agrees with Charest?s opinion. He also believes that God?s chosen people are those of the Jewish heritage.

The majority of seniors still think that this verse is directed to all followers of Christ.

?We are the light of God shining in the darkness,? Katie Ettner said. ?We are special, set apart and holy.?

Many see this as a call to obey the commands of God.

?Christians need to be a light for Jesus,? Danae Cook said. ?We are to shine before nonbelievers.?

Nic Westburg believes that because we live in a world of sin and darkness, the only true ?light? that Christians have is the truth and joy of praising God.

?I have been chosen, called by the Father to use my abilities for the good of His church,? Westburg said. ?It is now my responsibility to open my heart and be put to use. I will not be made a waste.?

Although there were a few differences in the interpretation of 1 Peter 2:9 between seniors, most reported that this verse represented what they hoped to live out in their futures. As their high school careers come to a conclusion and they venture into a new world, they hope this verse will guide and direct their lives.
