Social platforms and music boost peer connectivity
Today most teenagers possess a smartphone whether it be from Apple, Android to any other used, and certain applications are commonly found as favorites in this age group.
Teenagers love ways to connect and create space. Social media apps and self-engaging apps, are no surprise when the top five apps teens use are in one of these groups.
The top five applications that teens use most are Snapchat, Spotify, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. These applications are so popular with teenagers because they use them as their outlets. Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram are all apps that teens can use to connect with their friends, their community or the world in some way.
Spotify and YouTube are also ways they can connect, but these apps that teens use are primarily to relax, learn or pass the time.
Jeremiah Sieperda, ’17, uses the YouTube application the most on his smartphone and enjoys the ease of information access.
“I think I use it the most because it has the most variety of things on it,” Sieperda said. “Pretty much anything you can do you can find it on YouTube and get new information about it.
A high school wide poll of students at FC proves that these five apps are the most popular. The popularity of these apps in order ranks YouTube at no. 1, Instagram at no. 2, Snapchat at no. 3, Spotify at no. 4 and Twitter at no. 5.
Senior Daniel Ayres’s most used app is Snapchat. Ayres enjoys being able to connect with his peers at all times and thinks it is entertaining.
“Snapchat is a great tool when you’re on vacation or when something cool happens because you can capture it on camera or video,” Ayres said. “I love using it to connect with friends because it’s more interactive and entertaining than usual instant messaging. It’s my most used app because I’m usually never on my phone but when I am I’m connecting with friends, and I prefer Snapchat to do so.”
Other apps that were popular with students were: Netflix, Apple Music, Pinterest, ESPN and Tumblr.
Games, productivity and lifestyle apps are used by teens but not as much as social media or music. Teens enjoy connecting and solitude and the apps most popular with the age group prove just that.
