Scott Bucher demonstrates the gas laws to his third period chemistry class by blowing up a bottle filled with water and dry ice, Feb. 24.
The gas laws show the relation between pressure, volume and temperature, this demonstration gives students a visual of what happens when a gas is trapped in a confined space.
To complete this lab, dry ice (frozen CO2) is placed in water bottles with water (H2O). The lid of the water bottle is quickly screwed on tightly and students are asked to step back. Within seconds, the mixture produces a gas that makes the water bottle expand and explode.
