JH life science students present their model lung projects, April 19.
Science teacher, Terry Richards, assigns this project to teach his students about the respiratory system. This project allows his classes to have a visual example of what the lungs do.
Students are assigned to create a model of the lungs using some sort of container and balloons. The balloons act as the lungs and Richards’ classes are challenged to find a way to inflate the balloons representing what the lungs do when we take a breathe. Representation of the diaphragm was necessary to demonstrate how it moves when air enters the lungs.
After presenting, students must explain the process, focusing on different parts that air travels through when we breath.
Extra credit was available for going above and beyond the expectations, creating a unique and creative model.
