Country Fair provides options for all ages

Over Labor Day weekend, thousands of people from all over the state of California flocked to Hume Lake Christian Camps to take part in the Country Fair, Hume’s largest annual fundraiser. Nestled deep in the Sierra Nevada, the event included food, live and silent auctions, children’s games, shopping options and other recreational activities, Sept. 2.  

Dathan Brown works as the Executive Director of Hume Lake Christian Camps. Brown enjoys the fair due to the amount of people it draws up the hill.

“The Country Fair is an annual fundraiser for Hume Lake,” Brown said. “It’s been going on for decades but it’s more than a fundraiser. It’s when people from all over California gather here whether grandparents, children or parents and have a great day together. We eat some amazing food, have a chance to raise some money for Hume and have some fun. We have everything from our giant swing to archery to riding on the firetruck. It’s a great day.”

The morning kicked off at 9 a.m. as voices reverberated the National Anthem throughout the forest, followed promptly by a prayer. With food options at the snack shop, general store or concessions, hunger was never an issue. During the morning, there are several areas confining collections of items available to buy. This includes areas specifically designated for used books, tools, toys and used clothing.

Junior Jackie Winch helped work at the Country Fair with other students from her church, Atascadero Bible Church. They money they earned will cover part of their camp fee the following summer.

“I’ve always known about Hume,” Winch said. “I’ve been to camp every year I’ve been able to go, and my family goes up pretty often. I was mainly working in the kitchen and I really enjoyed getting to bond with the people I was working with. I made new friends with some people that go to my school but I haven’t really talked to. Also, having some free time was amazing because Hume is the greatest place ever.

“I like Hume because it always feels like home and it’s a safe place,” Winch continued. “The atmosphere is so livening and everyone is so kind. It’s a nice place to go to get away from all of the stuff that goes on at home.”
