Michael Fenton visits campus to observe FC math classes as Desmos Lead Instructional Designer as a part of FC’s new partnership with Desmos, Nov. 17.
With his first ever job being at Fresno Christian, Fenton was a part of the JH and high school math department for 11 years. He ranged from seventh-grade math to AP calculus and AP statistics. In his last few years at FC, he also contributed to some K-12 administration academic programs.
Fenton shares some of the ways FC has gotten involved with Desmos this year through their new partnership,
“Desmos has a partnership with FCS this year,” Fenton said. “We’re trying out some new activities and new technology. This gives me an opportunity to make classroom visits about once a month. It’s been so fun to see former students in the hallways. I can hardly believe how much older and taller and more mature they’ve gotten!”
For the past two years, Fenton has been a part of the Desmos team as Lead Instructional Designer. His job at Desmos consists of building digital math tools and activities for students and teachers to use in their classrooms with his team. Their goal is to make the math classroom a more social and creative space.
Fenton explains the similarities and differences between his current job and his past job at Fresno Christian.
“I still live and breath mathematics and mathematics education,” Fenton said. “I still wake up every day excited to get to work. I still count myself incredibly blessed to have an amazing job and remarkable colleagues. As for differences, I no longer get to spend the majority of my workday with students. I miss the daily interactions and the opportunity to get to know a small group of young people quite well over the course of a year (or more).”
The greatest change in Fenton’s life since leaving FC are his children. With his children being only six, four two and two when he left, and only one in school, his life has changed a lot. All of his children are now in school, the youngest being in preschool and oldest in second grade.
If you have any memories you would like to share your time with Fenton, we would love to hear them in the comment section.
