Chemistry student, Blake Burdan, ’20, works on his molecule models in Scott Bucher’s class, April 18.
In their unit, ‘Chemical Bonding’, the class studies molecular geometry, electronegativity and bond polarity.
To help students comprehend these new concepts, Bucher assigns charts consisting of molecules to identify and models built from candy.
The models give a visual aspect to class work and help students comprehend the unit.
Chemistry student Burdan appreciates building models in class to add to another way of understanding the lesson.
“Building models helped me understand the lesson much better because I got a visual 3D diagram of the atoms to go along with what I have already learned and demonstrated,” Burdan said. “I like that Bucher gives us the lesson and then allows us time to work on assignments that can show us how and why everything works. I relate very well to Mr. Bucher’s way of teaching and enjoy doing fun, hands on, assignments in class.”
They will continue to build their models and fill in charts, April 20.
