High school choir and lady’s ensemble take part in the fifth annual choir retreat in Cayucos, Sept. 8. The group, along with teacher  Susan Ainley, Ben Certain and parents, leave at 7:15 a.m. and arrive at Cayucos Community Church at 10 a.m. to rehearse a few songs before heading out to the beach. 

In the church, Ainley prepares an ice breaker game to connect students together and bond. The game’s purpose helps the class intermix with upper and under classmen together. 

After the game and rehearsal, the group splits up for lunch and time at the beach. Some activities students partook on the beach was spike ball, volleyball, surfing and walking along the pier. 

First year in choir, senior Hannah Springer shares her favorite part about the choir retreat and the different activities they participated in at the beach.

“My favorite part of the choir retreat was playing volleyball on the beach and being able to look out into the sea and just being able to take it all in,” Springer said. “At the choir retreat I walked around town looking at antique stores and shopping for souvenirs. I also went to the beach to play volleyball and went to look for seashells. I am looking forward to sing concerts and putting all of our hard work to use in choir. I joined choir because it was for my VPA credit and because it seemed easy. Now I realize how much I miss singing and how much I enjoy it now that I am in it.”

Although the retreat usually takes place in Bass Lake at the Degroot’s cabin previous years, Ainley decides to have it at Cayucos this year due to the cabin being remodeled.
