Students study mice and other animals in Zoology and Biology, Oct. 19.
In order to learn more about the life cycle and the food web, the lab is the home of mice, fish, a gecko and a bullfrog. Having animals in the lab allows students to take their knowledge to the next level by giving them a hands on learning experience.
Along with the fun of having class pets, comes the responsibility of caring for them. Both the students and Dr. Karen Walters care for the animals, although she is ultimately responsible for the well being of the animals. Dr. Walters shares why having a variety of species in the classroom enhances students education.
“Animals add interest and a sense of curiosity that helps students become more interested and engaged.” Walters said. “Many students do not have animals at home. Live animals provide an excellent opportunity to observe behavior and learn about rather than just from books.”
