FC quarterback talks football and Orcutt Academy

The Fresno Christian Eagles have gone through week one of the playoffs defeating Desert High, 57-0, at home, Nov. 2. This next upcoming game is against Orcutt Academy (San Luis Obispo), Nov. 9. This is the second time these two teams have faced off. In week eight, the Eagles and Spartans went head to head with the Eagles coming out on top, 45-27.

The Spartans missed several of their starting players due to academic situations. The playoff matchup looks to offer a different atmosphere as each team fights to avoid elimination and a punch their tickets to the finals. I sat down with senior quarterback Anthony Lonardo to discuss the Eagles situation.

“It’ll be a more challenging aspect to it,” Lonardo said. “We can’t take them lightly; we don’t take any team light because any team can beat any team on any given Friday night.

“I love the atmosphere of this place but it’s a bittersweet moment,” Lonardo continued.” I’m sad to see it end. It hasn’t sunk in that it’s my last game, but you know you can’t play high school football forever. If we all do our jobs, I believe we’ll be good.”

Lonardo has played multiple positions, including center, during his football career, not just quarterback. He shares how he began playing and what pro athlete he works to make his game similar to.

“I began playing football at Woods Elementary when I was about ten years old, so it’s been about seven years,” Lonardo said. “It has been a thought to pursue football as a career but it is not my goal in life. Someone I look up to would have to be Aaron Rodgers and I am a cheesehead. But with this past weekend (Packers vs. Patriots on Sunday night) it’s true what they say defense wins games. I believe Rodgers and the Packers have enough talent to make it to the playoffs this season.”

The Eagles host Orcutt Academy in the second week of playoff football at 7 p.m., Nov. 9. Make sure to come out and support the Eagles in their last home game of the 2018 season. The theme for the student section is “winter wonderland” so come snuggled up in your favorite festive attire.
