Biology teacher Dr. Karen Walters brings a bearded dragon into the science lab as a new class pet, Feb. 7. Walters continually introduces her classes to all kinds of creatures to provide visual aids to the subjects they are learning about.

Both students and Walters contribute to caring for the animals. Through this process, students learn the responsibly that comes with taking care of animals.Biology is currently in their DNA, evolution, and natural selection unit learning about how relates to animals and humans.

Second period biology student Faith Monroy, ’21, enjoys having a pet in the classroom because it encourages her to learn.

“In Biology, we are studying genetics right now,” Monroy said. “We have been learning about DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), evolution and natural selection as it pertains to humans and animals. We just got a new class pet today. It’s a bearded dragon and its name is Alien. I think it’s a great addition to class because it’s fun to observe and hold!”

The bearded dragon is a fairly popular pet despite common belief. They can live up to 10 years and can grow up to two feet in length. The class animal’s name is Alien, picked by her second period class.
