For each day of National Scholastic Journalism Week, The Feather looks to highlight our editors. Everyday will focus on a different editorial role and their position on the team. Today’s featured editor is sophomore Addison Schultz, senior editor. 

Following in her big sister Kamryn Schultz‘s, ’19, foot steps, Addison Schultz joined The Feather her freshman year as a journalist.

“Honestly, I joined The Feather because of Kamryn and all the cool opportunities I saw her getting to be a part of,” Schultz said. “I also thought it would be neat to carry on the legacy, so I joined. Then I realized that I was actually getting a lot better at writing so that’s why I came back for sophomore year”

At The Feather’s upcoming trip to Anaheim in April, Schultz will be teaching a session on info graphics.

One lesson she has learned, due to her time on the team, is how people have stories waiting to be shared and journalism is a way to share them. Schultz sees journalism as a way people can be informed about what’s happening around the world.

Over the last two years, she has been able to interview multiple influencial figures, one of her favorites being WWII veteran Dr. Fitzalbert Marius.

“I think my greatest accomplishment was being able to interview multiple veterans like Dr. Marius and the others at the Veterans Day memorial,” Schultz said. “I was able to learn from them and share their stories. Not only did I get to share their stories, but I got to tell them in a way that motivates students to live a life in service of others.”

Schultz thinks the most challenging part of her role is meeting deadlines and making sure that what she writes is fact based. She also makes sure what she writes applies to people on and off campus.

During and after high school, she plans to utilize the skills learned from The Feather to develop her writing style. She also hopes to build her communication skills.

Thankful for all of the life lessons and journalistic teachings she has received from The Feather, Schultz encourages others to do as she did and join the team.

“I would encourage others to join because it has truly made me a better and faster writer,” Schultz said. “Because of The Feather I am more confident in how I write and talk to people. I think these are skills that will last beyond high school and would be great for anybody to learn.”

Outside of the computer lab, you can catch Schultz on the FC volleyball court. She has been involved with volleyball since fifth grade, playing the outside hitter position last season.
