Students in third period, English 10 create a presentation about Disneyland, March. 15.
Researching information for a Disneyland presentation begins when students combine in groups of 2-4. Groups find information on the history of Disneyland, fun facts, favorite part and how it corresponds with novel the class is currently reading.
The novel the class is currently reading is ‘Funny in Farsi’ by Firoozeh Dumas. ‘Funny in Farsi’ is a memoir of the main character growing up Iranian while living in America. The author is also the main character, writing about her personal experience of moving to America in 1972.
English and Yearbook teacher, Andrea Donaghe, shares the importance of the project.
“I think this project is beneficial to my students because the chapter Firoozeh dedicates to Disneyland, everyone can relate to something starting out fun but turns boring,” Donaghe said. “I have been doing this project for 3 years. In the last semester, my class studied the holocaust, which is a heavy topic, so I wanted to make this project fun and bright. My class and I took a trip to the Museum of Tolerance to tie into our unit. I am hoping someday for a trip to Disneyland for this unit as well.”
‘Funny in Farsi’ has been taught at the school since Donaghe arrived at FCS. Donaghe read the novel in the past and was excited to see it incorporated in the curriculum.
