First day of spring 2019

[/media-credit] Flowers begin to bloom around the Fresno Christian and Peoples Church campus, March. 20.

The first day of spring officially starts at 5:58 p.m., March 20. Another name for the first day of spring is vernal equinox. Vernal equinox is when the sun’s light shines evenly over the earth’s equator.

On the day of equinox, day and night are divided in roughly equal 12-hour cycles. The day comes to an end with the sun moving to shine on the Northern Hemisphere.

Vernal is Latin for ‘spring’ and equinox means ‘equal night.’

When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, autumn is in the Southern Hemisphere. Many plants, trees and flowers begin to grow in spring because of the increase water from rain, sunlight and fertile soil.

Spring fever is physical and psychological symptoms that are associated with springtime. The body makeup changes because of hormones, diets and increased light during this season.

Fun Facts about Spring:

  • The earliest known use of the term “spring cleaning” was in 1857.
  • The word “spring” has been used for the season since the 16th century.
  • Spring fever is a real syndrome, studies have shown the body’s makeup changes during the spring season.
  • On the first day of spring, the sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart everywhere on the earth.
  • Springtime is the most popular time to buy houses.
