The Eagles overall record is 13-11-2 overall and 4-4 in the South West Sierra League as of Feb. 21.

CENTRAL SECTION, DIVISION V PLAYOFFS

MISSION PREP DEFEATS FC IN SEMIFINALS, 2-0, on Feb. 20
Inaccurate shots resulted in a semifinal loss to the No. 1 seed, Mission Prep, 2-0, on Feb. 20. The Broncos held possession most of the game, however goalie Christina Cabias made several saves to keep the score tied, 0-0, at half.

A Bronco scored the first goal of the game by dribbling up the field, 20 minutes into the second half. The Eagles then changed their game plan and switched forward Marielle Desrosiers with Cabias. However, 10 minutes later, an offender cut through FC’s defense and scored, ending the game, 2-0.

FC BEATS TRANQUILLITY, 3-2, on Feb. 15
FC defeated Tranquillity, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Central Section, Division V playoffs on Feb. 15. While FC outschanced the Tigers 20-10 in the game, the score was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Tranquillity opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark but five minutes later, senior Amanda Sherr crossed the ball to frehman Heather Lichti whose header just cleared the keeper’s hands and into the goal’s twine.

Converted keeper, senior Christina Cabias, dribbled up the field 20 minutes into the second half and scored to put the Eagles up 2-1. While the Tigers tied the game five minutes later, FC kept pressuring and were rewarded when Michelle Rose carried the ball through the midfield and scored with four minutes remaining despite a Tiger defender slide tackling her.

FC keeper, junior Marielle Desrosiers, made a couple of key saves to preserve the win.

FC appeared to score a fourth goal midway through the second half when Kristin Amerine fed the ball to Jennifer Rose near the keeper and scored but the referee thought the goalie had possession. A fifth goal was also not awarded after another Jennifer Rose shot. The Tranquillity keeper caught the line drive and fell backwards across the goal line. The ball and keeper both appeared to be beyond the line.

FC SHUTS OUT RIVERDALE, 2-0, on Feb. 9
Riverdale had their best opportunity to score in the first five minutes when a Cowboy striker drove a ball between keeper Marielles Desrosiers’ legs. However Desrosiers scooped up the ball near the goal line and the Eagles went on to defeat Riverdale, 2-0, on Feb. 9.

FC scored in the 10th minute as Jennifer Rose scored after Amanda Sherr sent a ball into the box on a corner kick. Rose, standing about 7 yards out, center box, headed the ball into the right corner to give the Eagles as 1-0 lead at half.

The Eagles dominated the second half getting 9 shots on frame to Riverdale’s one. Christina Cabias scored 20 minutes into the half after dribbling the ball through the midfield and Cowboy defenders. After the keeper challeged Cabias just outside the box, the Eagle midfielder dekked left and drove a shot far post from the 20-yard line.

The Eagles will next play in the SWSL playoffs with an opponent yet to be decided.

LIBERTY-MADERA DEFEATS FC, 2-1, on Feb. 6
Lack of teamwork in the second half resulted in a loss against Liberty-Madera Ranchos on Feb. 6.

In the first 20 minutes, Michelle Rose ran down field with the ball and pulled the goalie out of the box to score. The half ended with FC up 1-0.

When the second half began the Eagles seemed flat footed and struggled for possession. In the 25th minute Liberty scored. The Hawks regained control of the ball and dribbled up the side to score again a minute later on the cross. Despite opportunities to score, the Eagles? attempts were unsuccessful and lost, 2-1.

FC REBOUNDS, BLANKS CARUTHERS, 2-0, on Feb. 1
The Eagles evened their South West Sierra League record at 3-3 and defeated Caruthers, 2-0, on Feb. 1. The game also was designated as senior night and the last home regular season match.

In the 12th minute of the first half, Jennifer Rose was fouled inside the box and awarded a penalty kick (PK). Rose drove the ball and it hit the bar and deflected into the goal behind the keeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Throughout the first half, the Eagles had many shots on goal and opportunities to score but the score remained the same.

In the 36th minute Michelle Rose passed the ball to Amanda Sherr who then dibbled to the left side of the field and took a shot from inside the box. Sherr hit the inside of the post and the Eagles led, 2-0. The Eagles struggled offensively against a determined Caruthers defense and could not score again.

FOWLER DEFEATS FC IN OVERTIME, 2-1, on Jan. 29
Off shots in overtime cost the Eagles their chance to become league champions on Jan. 29. Fowler scored in the first 5 minutes. However FC tied the game minutes later.

Amanda Sherr scored from 20 yards out when she drove a ball at the keeper who was unable to control its spin. The ball slightly dipped and spun through her hands and over her head into the net.

Captain and goalie Christina Cabias switched posistions with junior forward Marielle Desrosiers, 10 minutes after half. With regulation time gone, overtime began tied at, 1-1.

In the last two minutes of the first overtime half the Redacts Amy Gavroian bent the ball in on a corner kick, to defeat the Eagles, 2-1.

EAGLES DEFEAT DOS PALOS, 3-1, on Jan. 26
Although Dos Palos scored in the first 10 minutes, the Eagles retaliated to win, 3-1, on Jan. 26. Almost 20 minutes later, Jennifer Rose was fouled in the box and captain Amanda Sherr scored on the ensuing pentalty kick (PK) to tie the game 1-1. According coach Gina Arabia, it seemed the referees ended the first half 12 minutes early and the scored was still 1-1 at half.

With an early start in the second half, Michelle Rose passed the ball to Christina Cabias who booted the ball into the goal. In the 10th minute of the second half, Michelle was fouled and received a PK. She made the shot to give FC a 3-1 lead. FC held on and that is how the game ended.

“The game was really fusterating” Kristen Amerine, ’07, said. “It was a combination of the refs and the team wasn?t playing as one. We didn?t have a good warm up because when we arrived, we had to start playing right away. We played down to their level not our level. We were letting the refereeing and the attitude of the other girls affect our playing.”

RIVERDALE NO MATCH FOR EAGLES on Jan. 22
With midfielder Amanda Sherr standing in as keeper, the Eagles shut out the Cowgirls, 5-0, on Jan 22. Christina Cabias headed the ball into the net in the opening 10 minutes and the Eagles led, 1-0.

Kristen Amerine scored over the Cowgirls head on a free kick in the 30th minute. One minute later Cabias scored her second goal to put the game out of reach. In the 36th minute, Jennifer Rose scored FC’s 4th goal of the half on a penalty kick.

FC substituted freely in the second half to give the reserves playing time. Michelle Rose scored with a flip shot over the Cowgirls’ goalie in the 66th minute to close out the scoring.

EAGLES DEFEAT CARUTHERS, 3-0, on Jan. 19
While all the other Eagles lost on this day, the girls’ soccer team gained and maintained their lead in the first four minutes, to defeat Caruthers on Jan. 19.

Michelle Rose scored FC’s first goal on the cross. 40 minutes later, senior and captain Kristen Amerine scored to end the half.

With the Eagles ahead, 2-0, coach Gina Arabia switched midfielder Amanda Sherr with goalkeeper Christina Cabias. Rose then scored her second goal to win, 3-0.

FOWLER BEAT FC, 2-0, on Jan. 16
Fowler defeated FC in their second league game, 2-0, on Jan. 16. In the 8th minute, Fowler scored but both offenses had few opportunities and each kicked one shot wide. Fowler led 1-0 at half.

The Redcats’ defense spoiled 9 unsuccessful Eagle opportunities to score in the second half. After 20 minutes of play in the second, Fowler scored their second goal to win, 2-0.

LIBERTY SHUTS OUT, 3-0, on Jan. 11
While Michelle Rose and Amanda Sherr both had chances to score in the first and second half, FC dropped their first South West Sierra League match to Liberty-Madera Ranchos, 3-0, on Jan. 11.

FC BLOWS OUT TRANQUILLITY, 12-0, on Jan. 8
Senior Kristen Amerine scored the first goal on the cross to establish an early lead against Tranquillity on Jan. 8. Ten minutes into the game Jennifer Rose took the ball up the left side of the field and made a left-footed shot.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Amanda Sherr dribbled up the field to score her third goal of the match. Minutes later Amerine scored her second goal. Goalie Christina Cabias switched positions with defender Elisa Leisle. Cabias scored her first goal in the game making it a 10-0 lead midway through the second. Both Sheer and Cabias score again to end the game 12-0.

Captain Amanda Sherr led the Eagles in a 12-0 rout of the Tigers with 6 goals.

FC SHUTS OUT AVENAL, 1-0, on Jan. 5
Amanda Sherr continues her torid scoring pace and scored the only goal as FC defeated Avenal, 1-0, on Jan. 5. Sherr scored in the 7th minute and the two teams only exchanged a couple of chances in the rest of the match.

“Playing in the wind was hard for the team because we’re not use to it,” coach Gina Arabia said. “We had a rough start. We need to work on playinig a well played first half. We also need to work on our warm-up so we won’t be flat-footed. Even though we had a rough start we made up for it in the second half.”

FC BEATS MENDOTA, 4-1, on Jan. 3
While the Eagles had 6 shots on frame in the first half, the only scoring opportunity came when Jennifer Rose’s shot was just tipped wide by the keeper, the FC offense came alive in the second half.

In the 55th minute, Rose was fouled in the box and Amanda Sherr placed the PK in the lower left corner for a 1-0 Eagle lead. Sherr scored her second goal from 25 yards out on a blast from the right side that seemed to fool the keeper.

In the 70th minute Sherr dribbled into the middle of the box and scored on a blast to the right corner from 18 yards out for her third goal. The keeper dove but just missed. Sherr had her second consecutive game with at least three goals.

Elie Wilhelm added an insurance goal in the 75th minute on a cross from Sherr who was running on the right side. Wilhelm just tapped the puck home on the near post.

Mendota scored to cut the lead to 4-1 during a scramble in the box in the 80th minute.

FC OVERWHELMS, ROUTS LATON, 10-0, on Dec. 19
Despite the Christmas break, the Eagles traveled to Laton to take on the Mustangs to open the first Southwest Sierra League. However, Laton was outmatched from the opening whistle and were routed by the Eagles, 10-0, on Dec. 19.

Five Eagles scored and Amanda Sherr had a hat trick as the Eagles dominated the Mustangs. Sherr opened the scoring in the 26th minute and Ellie Wilhelm booted her first goal of the year to make it 2-0 in the 29th minute. At half Christina Cabias left the net and Eliza Leslie took over as keeper for the 2nd half.

The switch paid off as Cabias scored in the 46th minute and the rout was on. Michelle Rose and twin sister, Jennifer, each scored 10 minutes apart as a part of a 8-goal 2nd half barage. Cabias scored her second and third while Cabias and Michelle each netted their second of the game.

The Eagles took 37 shots on frame in the second half while Laton only had one shot on Leslie.

“In our game against Laton we were able to practice everything we developed while playing at the Garces tournament,” coach Gina Arabia.

FC next travels to Mendota for a 3:30 P.M. match on Jan. 3, 2007.

2006 GARCES HOLIDAY SOCCER FESTIVAL, Dec. 15-16
DELANO ENDS FC’S TOURNAMENT, DEFEATS EAGLES, 2-0, on Dec. 16
Delano scored once in each half to defeat the Eagles, 2-0, in the last game of the 2006 Garces Holiday Festival. FC did not have any quality chances or shots on frame as injuries to Amanda Sherr, Kristina Amerine and Christina Cabias limited their ability to move the ball.

Despite the overall tournament record of 1-4, Arabia believes the experienced helped the team.

“The Garces tournament gave us a lot of necessary practice before we begin our league games,” Arabia said. “We progressively got better every game at Garces, working on playing together as a team. Also, doing some team building activities to get everyone comfortable with each other.”

FC BEAT WOODLAKE, 3-0, on PKs on Dec. 16
After the teams played to a 0-0 draw in regulation, FC scored three times during penalty kicks to defeat Woodlake on Dec. 16.

The Eagles took 12 shots on frame in the first half and 6 in the second but were unable to beat the Tigers’ keeper. However during penalties, three Eagles scored and FC keeper Christina Cabias made two saves to preserve the win.

Amanda Sherr, Christina Cabias and Michelle Rose all scored for FC who will next meet Delano for 13th place in the tournament.

BAKERSFIELD WEST DEFEATS FC, 1-0, on Dec. 16
With less than 3 minutes remaining in the game, West scored on a scramble in the Eagle box to pace West to a 1-0 win over FC at the Garces Tournament on Dec. 16.

The Eagles played their best game of the festival and had 13 shots on frame but could not beat the Viking’s keeper. Amanda Sherr had two glorious opportunities to score in the first half and one in the second but the keeper was up to the task and made a diving save on one shot labled for the corner.

Michelle Rose had the best chance in the second half for the Eagles when her 12-yard shot hit the crossbar and bounced out.

“We should have beaten West today,” Rose said. “We had better scoring opportunities than they did but we just couldn’t finish. We played well defensively and gave up a bad goal that gave them the win. But we are getting better as a team and that is what’s important.”

FC outshot the Vikings, 13-8, plus two shots off the bar. The Eagles next play Woodlake at 2 P.M. on Dec. 16.

McLANE DEFEATS FC, 4-0, on Dec. 15
After a scoreless first half, McLane scored 18 minutes into the second half on a shot off the post. While the Eagles were able to keep the game close, the Highlanders scored again with 5 minutes left in the second half to blow a close game open. With FC pressing, McLane scored twice more in the last 2 minutes and the Highlanders beat FC, 4-0, in the second game of the tournament for both teams.

BAKERSFIELD EAST DEFEATS FC, 3-0, on Dec. 15
The girls traveled to Bakersfield but dropped their opening match in the Garces Tournament when they lost, 3-0, to Bakersfield East on Dec. 15.

East scored one goal in the first half and two in the second including the third with only 4 minutes left. FC did not have many scoring opportunites. The Eagles next take on McLane on Dec. 15 at 2 P.M.

FC, FIREBAUGH MATCH on Dec. 11 was CANCELLED

COAST UNION INVITATIONAL, Dec. 8-9
As with most soccer preseason tournaments, the girls were scheduled to play two or three games each day. However, rain prevented all the matches from taking place and FC only played against Coast on day one.

GAME ONE: COAST 1, FC 0 on Dec. 8. Despite the rain, the girls played Coast and were unable to overcome the Broncos’ first half goal. The field turned to mud and, while FC had some chances in the second half, both teams were slowed by a muddy field.

GAME TWO: CENTRAL 4, FC 0 on Dec. 9. This game was supposed to be played the day before but the field flooded and was rescheduled. The Grizzlies scored two goals in each half and were full marks for the win. Earlier in the year the same teams played a scrimmage and the Eagles were routed, 11-0, so FC proved they had improved since the early fall.

GAME THREE: MADERA HIGH 1, FC 0 on Dec. 9. Madera scored in the last five minutes of the match on an 18-yard shot from the middle of the field. The game was marred after four Madera girls received yellow cards late in the match.

GAME FOUR: FC 1, EL DIAMANTE 1 on Dec. 9. During a torrential downpour, both teams appeared to be having fun in the mud bowl. An El Diamante forward scored from 20 yards out in the first half and Amanda Sherr dribbled through the midfield and drove the ball to the left corner of the net from 30 yards out to tie the score midway through the second half.

FC DEFEATS IMMANUEL, 3-0 on Dec. 7
Lead by senior Amanda Sherr’s 2 goals, the FC girls’ soccer team defeated Immanuel, 3-0. Defender Kristen Amerine had an assist to Amanda for one of her first half goals.

Team captain Kristen Amerine was pleased with the improvement of the young team.

“We did much better than expected,” Amerine said. “We communicated much better than the first game, but we still have many things to learn. The more we play together the better our team will become.”

FC WINS BY FORFEIT
Due to a bus transportation conflict, McLane did not arrive on Nov. 27 for a scheduled non-conference match. As a result, FC starts their season, 1-0.
