Through the pouring rain comes the cry of a wounded horse. Two men beat a fallen animal which refuses to stand and continue to pull their cart. A carriage drives up; William Wilburforce, friend of animals and representative in the House of Commons, jumps out and commands them to stop.
Amazing Grace opens in England 1779 with William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) traveling to his cousin?s mansion to rest, but his dreams are filled with nightmares. The horrors of slavery and his reoccurring defeat in the British Parliament fill his nights and days with restlessness and agony.
His cousins introduce him to Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai), they agree on everything, except slavery.
