The spotlight shines down upon the massive stage, its overwhelming light has become a symbol of the dreams each contestant strives. Engulfed by the bright colors and brilliant stage lights, they take the stage in turn, accepting frantic cheers and applause from anxious fans.

So begins the hype of another episode of American Idol on FOX Network. With each new installment, millions of Americans tune in to see their favorites either make or break their future in showbiz.

Now down to three female contestants and one male, America will find out on May 9 which three contestants have what it takes to make it to the finale. Next week, the much-coveted positions in the final two must not only have talent, but the adoration of countless viewers across the country.

According to host Ryan Seacrest, over 45 million votes were entered in last week’s American Idol.

The most recent episode (May 8) featured a guest appearance by singer, songwriter and producer, Barry Gibb, one of the original founders of the Bee Gees; the Idol contestants received a chance to work with a music legend.

Each Idol contestant was allowed two songs for what could be their final performance. They chose from a wide variety of classics by the Bee Gees, the challenge was to transform a group song into a solo performance.

Melinda Doolittle opened with “Love You Inside Out”. The song proved difficult for Doolittle as she sang well, but failed to find that infamous “wow factor” expected of each contestant.

Blake Lewis followed with “You Should Be Dancing”, careful to incorporate his signature beat boxing. Though an obvious fan favorite, Lewis took away from the song in his attempt to make it original.

LaKisha Jones brought her own rendition of “Stayin’ Alive”. From the start it was clear that her slower tone and lack of vocal feats took away from the classic style of the song and thus downgraded her performance.

Jordin Sparks lit up the stage with her rendition of “To Love Somebody”. At only 17, Sparks possesses a gentle ease and talent that outclass the other contestants.

The second round produced similar results to the first with Jordin Sparks again taking an obvious lead. She stole the show with “Woman In Love”, a performance to rival her first.

With the contestants so close to one another in range of talent, it is difficult to say who will be the next to go. I hope to see Sparks make it to the finals, perhaps up against Lewis as he is an obvious fan favorite.

I would recommend American Idol to anyone who loves music or competition. It is suitable for all ages and provided entertainment for all. Last season Taylor Hicks of Birmingham, AL, was America’s Idol.

Those who are disappointed when American Idol ends each year will be surprised to learn that the American Idols Live tour dates have just been released. The Season Six Top 10 Idols will visit Fresno on Saturday, July 20 at the Save Mart Center. All tickets go on sale May 19 at 11 A.M.
