KISS Country Radio host, Jody Jo, visits with The Feather team for News Engagement Day, sharing her skills and personal experiences, Oct. 3.
At age 15, Jody Jo started going to work with her dad at the radio station where she gained a love for music. At one point he father handed her the mic and left her to figure it out. Giggling the whole time she fumbled her way through her very first broadcast even miss pronouncing famous musicians names. She remembers this moment as the beginning of her career in radio.
The Feather regularly meets professionals with the goal of progressing their skills. Interviewing people is Jody Jo’s specialty and she shared advice with the journalists on how to help people feel comfortable and engage in deeper conversation.
“The best questions come from the last answers.” – Jody Jo
More than 20 years later, new technology has changed the industry. Even with everything now computerized, her goal remains the same; to let her listeners know who she is. When asked about the hardest part of her job, Jody Jo shared the difficult decision when diagnosed with cancer to “Live out loud,” rather than keep the journey private.
Most of her broadcasts share personal stories and involve family, friends and her three daughters. Cancer was a whole different type of vulnerability. Many people expressed their gratitude towards her honesty and she feels that if it only helped one person it was worth it.
Now, Jody Jo takes part in the Pink Heals Association in order to bring joy to cancer patients.
Jody Jo has been nominated for Fresno Bee People’s Choice Radio Personality, holding the title seven years in a row. Her current show airs 3-7 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10-3 p.m. on Saturdays.
