First year Home Economics teacher, Kristy Higton’s, 6th and 7th period, bake cinnamon rolls for the Christmas season. Students get into teams of two to three to make nine cinnamon rolls.
Students were divided into cooking groups where each person in the group had a job of either head chef, sous chef, or organization chef.
Steps they followed were;
Step 1 Make the dough and flatten it out after letting it rest
Step 2 Spread softened butter on top
Step 3 Sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on top then press down
Step 4 Roll into a spiral
Step 5 Cut rolls with floss for the perfect shape
Step 6 Put in the oven at 200 degrees
Step 7 Finish with glaze on top
After everything is cleaned up the class goes back to the room to take a quiz on how they enjoyed it. One person from each group will judge all the cinnamon rolls from the opposing groups.
Jeremy Reimer, ’25, uses his previous baking skills for this task.
“My favorite part about the lab was when I was kneading the dough, it got stuck to my hands so that was interesting to get off,” Reimer said.
This past semester the class has cooked numerous goods including rice krispie treats, chocolate chip and churro cookies, pancakes, and mashed potatoes. Their last food lab will be peach jam. After break the next big unit consists of banking and organization to start off the new year.
