Jetting off to eastern Europe over spring break, 39 from the Fresno Christian community embark on a journey through the cobblestone streets of whimsical Prague and Česky Krumlov, the grandeur of Vienna, the pearl of the Danube: the beauty of Budapest, and the historically-rich city of Krakow. History Teacher Kori James partnered with EF Student Tours to plan a customized adventure through some of the most intriguing and beautiful cities in Europe. This article is part of a student series highlighting their travel experiences.
Along the way, Julia Castiglione, ‘25 and Giada Gilmore Young, ‘27 tried and reviewed authentic food from each country.
Prague:
In the old town of Prague, markets consisting of food, jewelry, homemade items and other knick-knacks fill the center of town. Prague is full of tourists wandering around through different shops and restaurants.
At Kafka Hummus Café, Castiglione and Gilmore-Young try special items on their menu such as, chicken shakshuka, beef sirloin hummus bowl, spiced chicken hummus bowl, mango passion lemonade and tropical lemon lemonade.

One specific market in Prague sells Kürtőskalács, meaning, chimney cakes. Chimney cakes are similar to an American churro, but in the shape of a cylinder. This dessert is coated in cinnamon sugar and is often eaten with ice cream.
With each bite, ice cream fills the center, adding a cold, creamy twist to the crispy crust on the outside. Hints of vanilla, cinnamon and butter could be tasted throughout. The sweet aroma around it mirrored its sugary taste.
Český Krumlov:
In the dreamy town of Český Krumlov, a quaint little grocery store called Koloniál u zámku. Selling fruits, vegetables, basic groceries, quality farm products, as well as homemade pastries.
Castiglione and Gilmore Young sit down to try an assortment of pastries, describing their flavors, textures and appearances.
Vienna:
In the city of Vienna, next to the Albertina museum, sits a pretzel and hot dog shop. This is not any ordinary hot dog. With its cheese-infused sausage and huge bun, this hot dog is next level to the United States. The sausage warm inside the hole bun with fresh mustard spread on the inside.
Krakow:
Kraków the last city of the trip, was home to castles and salt mines as well as dragon mascots and pierogi, which are homemade Polish Dumplings. At Pierogarnia Krakowiacy, Castiglione and Gilmore Young try an assortment of flavors like cheese and mushroom, bacon and cherry.
Throughout all of these cities and countries, Gilmore Young and Castiglione tried a variety of foods they had never heard of or eaten before. Immersing themselves in the culture and heritage of the new place. When traveling to new places, it is important to see the value in trying new food and being adventurous with your meals.
